Foods and Drinks That Can Help Prevent Gout Attacks
While there isn’t necessarily a gout diet plan, there are some foods and drinks you can eat that will help decrease your chances of experiencing a gout attack. These include:
- This fruit is abundant in antioxidants and can help decrease uric acid levels in the body. They also help reduce inflammatory markers in the body.
- This includes regular and decaf coffee, as studies have shown that drinking coffee long term can lower the risk of gout. Research is still being conducted to find out how exactly coffee helps reduce the risk.
- Dairy products. Low-fat dairy, such as yogurt, can decrease your risk of gout.
- Vitamin C. While vitamin C can help reduce the risk of gout, studies have shown that vitamin C supplements may help prevent gout entirely. These supplements can also reduce uric acid levels in the blood. In addition to taking supplements, it’s a great idea to also consume fruits and veggies. Be careful with the amount of vitamin C you take in, though, as too much can increase uric acid levels. Talk with your doctor about adding supplements to your diet.
- It’s important to stay hydrated, as water helps us flush out excessive amounts of uric acid while also preventing uric acid crystals from forming in the body.
